Rocky Gorge Albany NH
Rocky Gorge was formed by a mile high glacier at this location about 10,000 years ago. The Gorge was created by the melting of this glacier.
Today, Rocky Gorge (Aka Upper Falls of the Swift River) is as beautiful as ever from the thousands of years of erosion through these rocks. Keep in mind that Rocky Gorge is just as dangerous as it is beautiful, which is the reason swimming is not allowed here. Many people have been injured or killed in the Swift River. One of the signs displayed at Rocky Gorge tells the story of Dorothy Sparks, who almost drowned at Rocky Gorge when she was trapped under the falls for 3 hours and 15 minutes on July 20, 1942. She was saved by a trooper who thought he was recovering Dorothy’s body. The reprinted Readers’ Digest article of Dorothy Sparks’s near death experience is on display at Rocky Gorge along the scenic trail.
Rocky Gorge offers a swift current with a 10′ total drop that exists under a foot bridge. The foot bridge is part of a scenic nature path that goes around Falls Pond. If you just go to see Rocky Gorge and don’t pay attention you will certainly miss the very short walk to Falls Pond, which is like looking at a painting most days. Also some chance you will see a moose out near, or even in, Falls Pond.
Weddings at Rocky Gorge: Rocky Gorge may be one of the best waterfalls in New Hampshire for a wedding. It’s close to the parking area and very scenically located in the White Mountain National Forest. The ease of access, parking, pathway, foot bridge and overall beauty make this worthy of putting on your list of waterfalls to check out for your search for an outdoor NH wedding location.
