The Albacore Museum: USS Albacore Submarine
The Albacore Museum is located right in Portsmouth NH. Visit the USS Albacore which is a one-of-a-kind submarine. On the grounds there is also the Submarine Memorial Garden. Inside the garden lies the sculpture of a dolphin.
The USS Albacore submarine, commissioned on December 5, 1953, was designed to be used for research by the Navy to test experimental features used in submarines today. The USS Albacore was decommissioned in 1972 and placed in an inactive ship facility in Philadelphia. In 1984 the submarine was towed to Portsmouth to be preserved. After a year, the USS Albacore was moved to Albacore Park in 1985 to be opened to the public.
USS Albacore museum tours are self-guided. During the walk-through you will hear different recordings about the submarine’s unique features. You will also hear actual recordings by former crew members which will take you back in time.
