The original Swift River Covered Bridge was lifted from it’s abutments by flood waters in 1869 and down the Swift River until it crashed into the Saco River Covered Bridge. The Saco River Bridge was also damaged and removed from it’s abutments. Both the Swift River Covered Bridge and the Saco River Covered Bridge floated down the river for 2 miles. the debris was cleaned up and used to build the existing Swift River Covered Bridge that still stands at this historic site today.
