The world-premiere staging of Kevin Puts’ The Hours comes to Peterborough Players Arts on Screen on December 10th. In her highly anticipated return to the Met, soprano Renée Fleming, one of the most beloved and celebrated artists of our time, returns to the Met stage for the first time since 2017. She has an extensive Met repertoire—including nearly 250 performances in 22 roles—as well as a legendary career boasting four Grammy Awards, a Tony Award nomination, and memorable performances including being the first opera singer to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 2014. Joining her are renowned mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, and Tony Award–winning Broadway actress Kelli O’Hara.
This trio of superstars join forces in this powerful and moving new adaptation of the acclaimed novel and the Oscar-winning film it inspired, The Hours tells the story of a day in the life of women from different eras. They portray women who grapple with their inner demons and their roles in society. The opera takes place in a single day. Clarissa is in New York City in 1999. Virginia is in Richmond, England, in 1923. Laura is in Los Angeles in 1949.
The highly anticipated premiere radiates with star power off screen too. Phelim McDermott, who recently created the Met’s acclaimed production of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten, directs this compelling drama, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium to conduct Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts’s poignant and powerful score.
This production harnesses the talents of set and costume designer Tom Pye (Gentleman Jack and Don Giovanni) with lighting designed by the outstanding Bruno Poet (Tina-The Tina Turner Musical and Bjork – Cornucopia). Poet is joined by Tony award-winning projection designer Finn Ross (Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and Chimerica). The Hours is choreographed by the talented Annie-B Parson (American Utopia) with Paul Cremo as the show’s dramaturg.
