  • Cairns on Mt. Washington

Curious if anyone knows the history on how the building of Cairns started on Mt. Washington. They are very interesting but I don't know much about them or the reasons why people place them there.

I don't know when the practice started. However, I do know that the cairns are for a visual guide when visibility is poor. That is the reason for the spacing of them. They have come in handy for me on several occasions when visibility has been poor above treeline.

Thanks for the information. Is there a certain measurement for spacing or are they just close to each other for times of poor visibility?

I recently saw cairns at the beach too, there were a ton of them placed on the rocks. Curious if they had some sort of deeper meaning in places like this.

Cairns make sense to be a visual aid to hikers in bad weather on Mt. Washington. They look like they take a long time to build. Do people stop to take a rest and build them?
