  • Remote Footprints

I read this interesting story in the Concord Monitor. This couple who are in their late 30ís and early 40ís have created a project called Remote Footprints. It started when they attempted to locate remote areas in their state. Areas that were far away from human interaction and where there was no cell phone service. But it seemed hard for them at first because they could not find a spot far enough away from a road. Rebecca started utilizing computer software to locate the most remote of areas.

Rebecca and Ryan Means both work as wildlife biologists for Coastal Plain Institute in Florida. They have so far been to the most remote locations in 17 states and they plan to find the most remote place in all 50 states. They carry their 3-year old Skyla along with them in a backpack. As their daughter, she takes after mom and dad for their love of the outdoors.

When they came to NH, it took 2 days for them to find the most remote location. It is nestled in the wilderness close to Lincoln. There is no cell service, no people, no noise and no roads for miles.

Last week, they completed a month long trip to 7 states and covered about 80 miles. They stay at the home of friends but most of the time they camp and live out of a cooler in their truck. Ryan carries their tent and everything else they need in a 55 pound tent and Skyla is carried by her mom in a 40 pound backpack.

Their goal is to raise more money so they can cover all 50 states. They document each location and write about the area on their website,
