I've been told that September is the best time to hike theFranconia Ridge Loop. How is it in the summer?

Not too bad in the summer. It can be a cool retreat on a hot day but if its really humid it can be miserable. In September you get that cooler/drier/crisper air and its not so hazy.

If anybody's still reading or comes across this -- Franconia Ridge is awesome anytime. If somebody suggested September, they're probably shooting for peak foliage time, which is beautiful anywhere around (not at all specific to the ridge), but the mountains are great year-round. The bummer part about hiking in the summer is that it's often hot and often the air can be hazy and obscure distant views, but from Franconia Ridge (and many/most hikes) you're in the mountains enough that you don't need 80 mile visibility to enjoy the best sights.
